1) Job Opportunity: PhD Studentship - Aquaculture And Fish Diseases (United Kingdom)

This research projects aims to develop a model for optimal surveillance of salmon diseases with the most efficient use of sampling effort. The project will involve assessment of association between infectious diseases and observed patterns in reported mortality, taking into account factors such as time of year, water temperatures, site history and stage of the production cycle. This analysis will use historical industry data on mortality and site factors to search for useful risk indicators. Epidemiological models will be developed to simulate spread of infection due to transport of fish between sites and spread through the environment using network data obtained from the Scottish Government. Using earlier studies as a start point (see references), these epidemiological models will be combined with the risk-targeting derived from the mortality records with the aim of identifying means of detecting infection before it spreads. The impact of disease will also be assessed, again using the industry mortality records and estimation of the costs these losses impose. This, in combination with costs of surveillance (data from SG), will be used to identify optimal surveillance effort that can provide healthy and high welfare fish.

Based at the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University, this project would be equally suitable for a student with a mathematical, epidemiological, or statistical background with an interest in aquaculture and fish diseases, or for a numerate biology student with an interest in modelling.

2) El Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Baja California (CICESE), convoca a concurso abierto para ocupar plazas de INVESTIGADOR en el Departamento de Oceanografía Física. Buscamos candidatos con doctorado capaces de realizar investigación original e independiente en el área de la Oceanografía Física. Alentamos de manera especial, aunque no exclusivamente, la participación de candidatos con especialidad en el estudio de la hidrodinámica estuarina y costera, energías alternativas, modelación océano/atmósfera o modelos acoplados relacionados al estudio del clima.

Se espera que los candidatos sometan proyectos a las agencias de financiamiento nacional e internacional para procurarse recursos y llevar a cabo su investigación, así como involucrarse en proyectos de vinculación con los sectores productivo, social o gubernamental.

Los candidatos deberán además ser capaces y estar dispuestos a dirigir y asesorar estudiantes a nivel maestría y doctorado, así como impartir cursos de posgrado en el área de oceanografía o meteorología.
