1.- A forward genetic screen in the marine planktonic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia .
Laboratory of Ecology and Evolution of Plankton
Director of Studies: Mariella Ferrante
Internal Supervisor: Marina Montresor

A PhD position is available in the Laboratory of Ecology and Evolution of Plankton at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn to carry out a mutagenesis screen in the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata. Candidates with an interest in genetics and marine biology are encouraged to apply. We are seeking highly motivated applicants with experimental lab skills, preferably in molecular biology. Our group is interested in the genetics of planktonic diatoms, with the aim to develop molecular tools for the study of the biology, their ecological relationships and for possible biotechnological applications.

The PhD project will focus on the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata, a species that can be isolated in the Gulf of Naples and whose ecology and life cycle have been investigated. Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata belongs to a group of toxic species, being able to produce the neurotoxin domoic acid. The scope of the project is to generate a collection of stable diatom mutants through random chemical mutagenesis.

We will screen for different traits, such as altered morphology, altered production of domoic acid or of fatty acids, and we will characterise the mutants to define the molecular pathways involved. The project will contribute to establish Pseudo-nitzschia multistratw as a model organism.

The experimental work will be carried out in the multidisciplinary environementlal of the Laboratory of Ecology and Evolution of Plankton,
integrating the molecular studies with the ecological expertise of the Stazione Zoologica. Training will be provided in the basics of diatom identification, isolation and maintenance of cultures, experimental set up, molecular approaches, mutagenesis and genetics, basic chemical assays.

Deadline for receipt of completed applications (application form plus 2 letters of recommendation) is September 20th 2011.

3.- 3 Postdoc positions offered at KAUST University:

Postdoc 1: Genomics based analysis of marine planktonic communities

KAUST University seeks to hire a post-doc researcher to carry on analysis of planktonic diversity using 16S environmental tag sequencing . The goal of the project is to understand which factors determine biodiversity and betadiversity in planktonic systems in particular using molecular tools to determine the species present in the system. A secondary objective is to analyse gene expression under specific conditions (metatranscriptomics).

We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced postdoctoral scientist with interest in collaborative research and in developing/applying novel techniques. Applicants should have a strong conceptual and practical background on the application of molecular techniques for characterizing communities. Applicants are expected to have a strong quantitative basis, a solid publication record on the subject and capacity for team work.

Experience in marine systems will be considered.
