A position for a PhD student is available at the Renard Centre of Marine Geology of the Department of Geology and Soil Science at Ghent University, for the duration of 4 years starting from February-March 2012.

This PhD project aims to contribute to the comprehension of the palaeoceanography of the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), as well as of its impact on deep-water

In order to improve knowledge of the MOW variability, it is essential to study high-resolution sediment archives on sites which are located along the MOW pathway outside the proximal northern Gulf of Cadiz.

The Bay of Biscay and the southern Gulf of Cadiz are understudied regions regarding the palaeoceanography of their intermediate water masses. Therefore, this study will focus on selected glacial and interglacial intervals and transition periods since the Middle Pleistocene. The study will involve high-resolution geochemical and sedimentological palaeoceanographic analyses of sediment cores, as well as the interpretation of geophysical site-survey data. This project will be carried out in close cooperation with partners at the Laboratoire de Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE, Gif-sur-Yvette, France) and the Laboratoire des Intéractions et Dynamique des Environnements de Surface (IDES, Université de Paris Sud 11, Orsay, France).
